Children admitted to schools for alternate education programme

Rolpa, Dec 12: A total of 351 students were admitted to school as part of an alternate education programme in southern part of Rolpa, a survey has revealed.

The survey was carried out by Human Rights Awareness Centre (HURAC) – Rolpa in Jaulipokhari, Jedang, Kareti, Korchawang, Talawang, Gaurigaun and Ghartigaun VDCs. The survey further showed that at least 115 children are yet to be admitted to schools. Most of these students outside of the schools do not have parents, Education Official, Pramila Gharti Magar said.

Gharti added that there are many children who go to brick kilns to work with their parents and many more who have dropped out of schools by coming under influence of their friends.

The alternate education programme has been running for the past three years by targeting such students. HURAC Rolpa Executive Director, Raju Acharya, confirmed the admission of 351 students in 31 different alternate classes being run for the past two years.

Acharya added that efforts were underway to draw more students to the alternate programme in all the VDCs, which the HURAC oversees.
